Connecting Classrooms Around the World: Promoting WorldClassroom Online International Exchange through an EDU-Port Project (2024 Supported Project: HelloWorld Inc.)

2026年1月29日

Project Overview

WorldClassroom is an online international exchange platform developed and operated by HelloWorld Inc., through which classrooms in Japan are connected online with classrooms overseas, offering an international exchange experience called “IntEx” (Note). IntEx creates opportunities for students to put their everyday foreign language learning into practice while engaging with different cultures and gaining an understanding of diversity.
(Note)“IntEx” stands for International Exchange / International Experience. It is a concept that collectively encompasses all human-to-human international exchange activities, regardless of whether they are real or online, for the purpose of multicultural understanding and other related goals. “IntEx” is a registered trademark of HelloWorld Inc. in Japan.

This project has three objectives: to promote Japanese-style education, enhance understanding of Japan, and facilitate people-to-people exchange. Through IntEx programs connecting students of the same generation, the project has supported the development of students’ practical communication skills and the promotion of mutual understanding across diverse social and cultural contexts.

WorldClassroom Online International Exchange Initiatives

WorldClassroom is committed to building a global education network in order to continuously and reliably provide exchange opportunities to schools both in Japan and overseas.

As part of this commitment, in 2025, WorldClassroom collaborated with educational institutions and related organizations in countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and South Korea, engaging in activities including joint briefing sessions for schools and the signing of memorandum of understanding. As a result of these activities, WorldClassroom received official recognition through a formal letter of support from the Philippine Government Department of Education, which made it possible to expand opportunities for international exchange with local public schools.

Collaborating with educational institutions and related organizations in various countries has also sparked a deeper understanding of the educational challenges, needs, and education policies of those countries. These insights, in turn, have contributed to WorldClassroom’s efforts to share Japan’s educational initiatives internationally and to design exchange experiences that respond to the needs of each country.

Implementing IntEx online can sometimes present challenges and constraints in the process of coordinating the schools, including differences in foreign language proficiency, academic calendars, and levels of ICT infrastructure. However, by establishing guidelines and creating and providing supplementary teaching materials, we were able to ensure the quality of students’ experiences across all exchanges. The project also yielded the important insight that close collaboration with local school administrators and educational institutions is essential in order to make flexible adjustments while taking into account country-specific social and geographic conditions, for example, adapting program design to local school systems and schedules, addressing disparities in access to digital devices, and responding to infrastructure disruptions caused by natural disasters.

Feedback after the Exchanges

The results of a post-exchange survey of overseas teachers indicated significant learning outcomes and benefits in three areas: cultural exchange, practical use of foreign languages, and enhancement of the educational value of the schools.

<Participant feedback collected after the survey>
・The students have a strong desire to interact directly with Japanese people and to visit Japan in the future.
・The students took pride in sharing their own culture, leading to increased self-esteem.
・The students were excited to use English in real-life situations, boosting their motivation to learn foreign languages.
・The students talked about what they had learned through IntEx and were observed using Japanese expressions they had picked up.
・Some students expressed interest in studying in Japan or seeking employment abroad.
・Connecting with overseas schools through IntEx has contributed to enhancing the educational value and recognition of our school.

Moving Forward

The National Security Strategy adopted by the Japanese government in 2022 highlights the importance of promoting people-to-people exchanges. However, up to now, such exchanges have mainly consisted of international student exchanges and visits by government officials or cultural figures. The increasing introduction of WorldClassroom into public education settings will enable broad and widespread people-to-people exchanges with elementary, junior high, and senior high schools around the world, especially in Asia. This will promote mutual understanding at citizen level and encourage the sharing of fundamental values such as the rule of law, thereby contributing to Japan’s national interests from a security perspective as well.

We also consider that this project has provided our company with a significant foothold for the overseas expansion of a Japanese-style education and international exchange model. In particular, the support we received when implementing WorldClassroom in ten countries enabled us to gain a comprehensive understanding of differences in areas of interest in Japanese society and culture, as well as varying needs for international exchange across countries. In addition, being selected as an EDU-Port supported project contributed greatly to increased recognition from governments and ministries of education in each country.
Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen our collaboration with schools and educational institutions worldwide, striving to create educational value by developing this initiative as a sustainable model.
